June 22 to July 19, 2018

6/22/18 - Met Shorty and Debbie on the other side of Antioch Bridge. Today we are headed to Frontier RV Park in Winnemucca,  NV. Left at 8:00 & arrival time is approximately 2:15.

A beautiful day as we approach Donner Pass.

Entered Nevada at 11:53 a.m., and arrived at Frontier RV Park in Winnemucca about 3:30.

After a long day driving 362 miles, we enjoyed happy hour, had dinner and played a round of cards at Frontier RV Park. The weather was beautiful.

6/23/18 -  Headed out at 9:00 to Jerome, ID, which is 312 miles from Winnemucca. Warm and dry weather, about 73 degrees.  There is a lot of nothing out here.

I drove for about 45 minutes this morning. It was uneventful (which is good thing) even though the left lane was closed and blocked by large cones.

Interesting tunnel we passed through. Still on I-80 in Nevada.

Arrived in Twin Falls, ID, and we both needed fuel. Found a WalMart with great prices. Diesel at $3.28/gallon. Bill did a great job driving a slalom thru the parking lot to get to the fuel pumps.

Staying at the Jerome KOA. Good thing we had reservations since this park is sold out.

After getting settled, we headed to the bridge that crosses over the Snake River.

Evil Knievel jumped this canyon. Others parachute down.

Had a fun dinner at Dunkens Draught House in downtown Twin Falls.

6/24/2108  Left Twin Falls/Jerome KOA about 8:45, and are headed to Sula, MT, which is about 312 miles, on Hwy. 93, which is just 2 lanes. Not many cars.

We seen fields of potatoes as we left the Jerome, ID area.

Came upon the Crater of the Moon National Preserve.

Miles & miles of lava

6/25/2018 - Arrived at Sula, MT about 3:00 p.m.  Once turning off Hwy 93, we drove 9.4 miles, unhooked truck and turned right onto Timber Ridge Rd., crossed a very narrow bridge, and drove back to Jimmy & Debbie's house.  Jimmy was deciding where to put us all - Shorty & Debbie pulled into a grassy area, and we were supposed to go right next to them near the road.  Since there had been 2 weeks of solid rain, the ground was very soft, and the motorhome was sinking in the mud.  After putting wood under the back tires, we still were sinking.  We moved onto the back of the gravel driveway next to his garage.  About an hour later, three more motorhomes roll in.  We meet everyone - Frank & Donna DeGelas, Jeff & Paula Wombacher and Randy & Darine Conner.  Bill, Shorty & Jimmy also graduated from high school with Paula.  We all go to a nearby restaurant - The Rocky Knob.

The group

6/26/2018 - Today is the abalone feed.  Jimmy & Shorty begin preparing the abalone first thing in the morning. Slicing, pounding and breading, then breakfast was served for everyone.

Late morning, 9 of us head out in 2 jeeps to drive on the fire trails. Indian (Rich Magill) comes up in his military jeep, and Bill rides with him. It was a beautiful drive through the forest and over the mountainside.  We saw about 5 deer running up hills, and areas of re-growth from a fire several years ago.  We were glad that Indian showed up, since he travels with his chain saw to cut trees that fell across the road.

Wildflower

6/27/2018 - We all take off in 2 jeeps and the truck and head up the mountain to shoot guns.  We were beginning to shoot, and Indian comes up in his jeep. There were several guns, so we all got to do some target shooting, which also included a cantaloupe.  Of course, it got blown to smithereenze.  After shoothing, we head to where Jimmy sets up his Elk Camp during hunting season.

We head home, have appetizers for dinner, and go to bed.  At 9:30 p.m., it is still light outside making it difficult to think about going to bed.

6/28/2018 - We all agree that 9:00 a.m. is the time to leave for West Glacier KOA in W. Glacier, Montana.  A few stops for pictures, fuel, etc. along the way.  It was a beautiful drive along the Flathead River, which is a huge river.

6/29/2018 - We drive into Glacier National Park. We want to check out where we will put the rafts in and out for our float trip on Sunday.  We will put the rafts in at Polebridge and take out at Big Creek Campground.  We head up to Logan's Pass on the "Going to the Sun" road.  We stopped at the Logan's Pass Visitors Center and it rained, so we ate lunch in our vehicles, then down to Lake McDonald Lodge and waited to board our river cruise at 3:00 p.m.

6/30/2018 - Today we head to Whitefish, Montana to ride the tram to the top of the mountain. We had lunch and enjoyed the view - after the clouds or fog burned off.  After heading back down the mountain, we rode a slide and rode another tram back up.

7/1/2018 - Our raft trip is today, and we need to pick up the rafts at Glacier Outdoor Rentals. We load up the equipment (rafts, pumps, lifevests and oars) and drive up to Polebridge. We get in the water about 10:40 a.m. (20 minutes ahead of our schedule). There were 4 rafts: #1 Bill, Kathy, Shorty, Debbie; #2 Jimmy, Debbie, Jeff, Paula; #3 Frank, Donna, Randy, Darine; #4 Brad and Julie.

Weather was cloudy and we had raincoats, umbrellas on board. Temperature was in the mid-60's and the water was cold. Brrrrrr.....!  Raft #2 took a wrong turn, and we were happy we did not follow them, although we tried to, but the current took us off to the opposite side of the river. All 3 other rafts pull over and wait for the wayward raft and passengers to catch up. Randy had a GPS radio, which Jimmy had one too, so we were able to make contact with them.  After 2 hours, here they come.  They had to pull/push the raft up the current. All 4 of them were wet, cold and worn out.  We finished our raft trip without missing our "take out" spot. Brad and Donna had made a landmark so we would recognize where our take out point was.  We got back to the campground about 8:00, and it was an early night for everyone.

7/2/2018 - Today we leave W. Glacier for Jellystone Park in Missoula, MT.  After we arrive and get set up, we head to a car wash, Costco & WalMart for grocieries.  A yummy beef stroganoff dinner prepared by Shorty & Debbie was enjoyed by everyone.

7/3/2018 - This morning, we discovered that friends from our RV Club are staying a few rigs down from us.  We visit with Ross & Marge Hill until we are ready to head to the Bison National Range.  We have some rain on the way, so now the truck is getting dirty again.  After driving around the range, we are now muddy again, and scrape mud off of the running boards (again)!  Of course, Bill gets teased about washing the truck.  We seen Elk, Deer, Antelope and a Bear.  It was really cool to see her meandering in the meadow eating weeds, flowers, etc.  Someone seen cubs, but we did not see them.

Heading out of the Range, we ran into heavy rains.  We are on our way to check out the Pow-Wow in Arlee.  You are not allowed to bring firearms or alcohol into the parking area, so we turn around so no one is subjected to a vehicle inspection.  Bill & I and Shorty & Debbie head back to Costco to pick up some forgotten items, and then back to the RV Park.

7/4/2018 - At 11:00 a.m. we head to Arlee to watch a small town 4th of July Parade, then went over to see the Grand Entrance of the Indians at the Pow-Wow.  Interesting dancing and beautiful clothing.

We eat dinner at Cracker Barrel and have a beer for dessert at Highlander Brewery in Missoula.  The brewery had a nice patio with a creek next to it.  It was very relaxing to sit and watch the creek flowing.

Back at the RV Park, we visited with everyone, and said our Good-Byes to Randy & Darine, who were going to Yellowstone, and Brad & Julie, who went to visit family.

7/5/2018 - We have a long drive today (450 +/- miles), so we head out at 7:00 a.m.  We are on our way to 7th Ranch RV Park in Garryowen, Montana.  We enjoy cocktails and dinner outside in the warm weather.

7/6/2018 - Went to see Custer's Last Stand at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.  So interesting to walk around an area spotted with headstones of the gravesites where soldiers and indians died in the June 25, 1876 battle.  We watched a movie, listened to a informative talk, then toured the area.  George Armstrong Custer's headstone is outlined in black.  All the soldiers that died have been moved to a grave and monument at the top of the hill where Custer died.  Custer's body has been moved back to West Point.

Soldiers' actual gravesites. Buried on 6/26/1876 by Capt. Benteen's men. Graves were very shallow and bones were later moved under a monument on hilltop where Custer died.

Lunch at Custer's Trading Post and Cafe. We had a Bison Burger and tased indian fry bread (which is like a sugarless donut). Our waitress learned to shinny like a horse when she was a little girl growing up in New Mexico, so we asked her to show us.
